Moss Claims Yakima Feature
Washington Midget Racing Association
Yakima Speedway, Yakima, Wa.,  June 19, 2004    by John Hunter

Rick Moss piloted the Harold Beale owned, Zakula-Beale Auctioneers Beast/Pink Ford to a narrow victory in the 35-lap WMRA feature on the fast Yakima Speedway half-mile oval.  Moss used an inside pass of rookie Scott Walker on lap fifteen to capture his first WMRA feature of the season.  Brad Curtis drove the Joan Curtis, Composite Laminate Specialties Beast/Mopar to second, a car length behind Moss. Walker took home third in his Hall Chevrolet, Shy’s Pizza Stealth/Gaerte, another five car lengths back.

The field was paced to the green by Walker and Rob Lindsey with Walker getting the jump as the field entered turn one.  Outside second row starter, Rory Price, got a great start and was able to get under Lindsey exiting turn two as the low line appeared to be the quickest.  The running order at the completion of the first lap was Walker, Price, Lindsey, Steve Spoor and Brian Olson   On lap two, Olson was able to get around Spoor exiting turn two with Moss getting under Spoor for fourth entering turn three.  On lap four, Olson tried to use the high line to pass Lindsey but slid up a little high exiting turn two allowing Moss to move into fourth as they entered turn three.  On lap five, Moss out braked Lindsey entering turn one to take third with Olson following right on his tail.  The running order after five laps was Walker, Price, Moss, Olson and Lindsey with Spoor, Curtis, Ken Ferris, Matt Stone and Kenny Wood rounding out the top ten.  Price was using the low line in one as he attempted to take the lead from Walker, but was unsuccessful as each attempt was thwarted exiting turn two.  On lap seven, Curtis tried an outside pass of Spoor entering turn one.  Contact was made which resulted in Spoor spinning.  Unfortunately he was struck by another, resulting in front end damage, ending his night.  Under the yellow, Kurt Wilson exited with mechanical problems. The restart order was Walker, Price, Moss, Olson and Curtis.  Moss got a great restart and was able to get under Price for second exiting turn two.  On lap ten, Olson tried to get around Price entering turn one.  The resulting contact sent up a shower of sparks as the two cars got entangled.  When they finally separated, Price was off the track outside turn two with Olson calling it a night.  Tony Seidelman was an innocent victim and went off the track to avoid the spinning car of Price.  Under the yellow Nick Seidelman exited with engine problems.  The restart order was Walker, Moss, Curtis, Lindsey and Ferris.  As the green waved, Moss tried to get under Walker entering turn one but Walker was faster exiting turn two so Moss had to temporarily settle for second.  The top five positions remained the same for the next few laps.  Matt Stone called it a night on lap twelve when he lost his power steering belt.  On lap thirteen, the third yellow waved when Skeeter Flake stalled at the top of turn four with mechanical difficulties.  Walker brought the field down for a slow restart, which played right into Moss’ hands.  As the duo entered turn one, Moss had pulled even with Walker and the two raced side by side for the next two laps.  Finally on lap fifteen, Moss was able to take the lead exiting turn four.  Another yellow waved on lap seventeen when Chad Draper got into the wall exiting turn two.  The running order after seventeen was Moss, Walker, Curtis, Ferris and Lindsey.  Price was already back up to sixth with Ben Petter, Spence Gatrell, Wood and T. Seidelman rounding out the top ten.  Moss slowly pulled away from Walker who had his hands full with Curtis.  Curtis appeared stronger down the straight but Walker was exiting the corners a little quicker.  On lap twenty-nine, Curtis was able to get under Walker for second but at the same time, Gatrell was spinning exiting turn four, negating the pass.  Moss brought the field down with a slow restart and moved to a quick two car length advantage.  Curtis was all over Walker who appeared to be getting loose exiting the turns.  Finally on lap thirty-two, Curtis was able to get even with Walker exiting turn four and finally make the pass exiting turn two.  With three laps to go, Moss held a six car length advantage over Curtis, but Curtis was closing fast.  Unfortunately for Curtis, there were not enough laps left.  Moss took the checkered a car length ahead of Curtis for his first feature victory of the season with Walker holding on for third with Ferris and Lindsey on his tail.

Nick Seidelman led wire to wire in winning the first heat, which ended under a red flag when Stone spun and did a slow roll.  Stone wasn’t injured and the car was repaired, thanks to help from several crews, in time for the main.  Lindsey won the fast heat in impressive style over Walker, Price and Spoor.  Wood and Moss took the dashes.  Curtis set fast time with a clocking of 18.576.
