Moss Wins Third Feature
Washington Midget Racing Association
State Central Speedway, Ephrata, Wa.                                                                         by John Hunter

Rick Moss drove the Zakula Beal Auctioneers Beast/Pink Ford to his third feature win of the season on the wind swept State Central Speedway oval.  Moss started seventh in the thirty-five lap main and was able to take the lead from Rob Lindsey, driving the Lindsey Motorsports Beast/Gaerte, on lap twenty-five.  Lindsey trailed Moss by six car lengths at the checkered with Brad Curtis in the family owned Beast/Mopar another car length back in third.

With an eight-car invert, Lindsey and Ben Petter paced the field to the green.  Both entered the first turn side by side but Lindsey was able to use the quicker low groove to pull ahead of Petter exiting the second turn.  Nick Seidelman and Curtis were able to keep Petter in the high groove which made it possible for both to make the pass through turns three and four.  Petter was able to get back in line behind Curtis and hold fourth.   Spence Gatrell was right on his tail with Brian Olson, Rick Kraft, and Ken Muth rounding out the top ten after the initial lap. On lap three, Curtis was able to get under Seidelman entering the first turn to take the second spot.  Lindsey had moved to a five-car length advantage over Curtis as both began separating themselves from the rest of the tightly packed field.  Kenny Wood made an early exit on lap three with motor problems.  On lap eight, Moss was able to get under Gatrell down the front straight to move into the top five as Lindsey and Curtis had checked out.  Ferris was able to make the same move on Gatrell on lap nine with Olson using the high line to get around Gatrell the following lap.  The running order after ten laps was Lindsey, Curtis, Seidelman, Petter and Moss with Ferris, Gatrell, Olson, Kraft and Muth all nose to tail.  Petter was trying several different lines in order to take third but Seidelman was running a smooth consistent line.  On lap eleven, Moss was able to get under Petter for fourth as the field exited turn two.  By now, Lindsey held a five-car length advantage over Curtis who was another ten car lengths ahead of Moss.  On lap fourteen, Ferris was able to get under Seidelman for fourth and begin his pursuit of Moss.  Olson got under Petter exiting turn two on lap fifteen to move into seventh.  The leaders were entering lapped traffic, which was a benefit to Moss as Lindsey and Curtis were held up slightly on two occasions.  By lap twenty, Lindsey’s lead had shrunk to a mere car length with Moss another two car lengths back in third.  Ferris, Olson and Petter were another two car lengths back with Seidelman, Gatrell, Kraft and Muth the only other cars on the lead lap.   On lap twenty-two, Curtis entered the first turn a little high, opening up the bottom groove for Moss.  Moss and Curtis raced side by side into three before Moss was able to edge ahead and start his charge on Lindsey.  Lindsey was developing a push, which would allow Moss the opening he was looking for.  On lap twenty-four, Lindsey pushed slightly exiting turn four, opening the bottom for Moss.  Lindsey tried to hold Moss off through turns one and two, but Moss was too strong.  At the same time, Skeeter Flake developed motor problems forcing him to the pits.  For the remaining ten laps, Moss slowly stretched his advantage over Lindsey while Curtis stayed right on Lindsey’s tail.  Ferris and Olson had separated themselves from Petter but neither had anything for Curtis.  At the checkered, Moss held a six car length advantage over Lindsey and Curtis with Ferris and Olson another four car lengths back.  The victory increased Moss’ advantage over Ferris to forty points with only two races remaining in the chase for the season championship.

Ferris set quick time for the third time in four races with a clocking of 13.523.  The B. Dash was won from the pole by Muth over Kraft and Flake.  Olson captured the A Dash over Moss and Gatrell.  Lindsey won the first heat over Kraft, Muth and Breanna Lopez, in her first midget appearance.  Seidelman led wire to wire in capturing the fast heat over Olson Ferris and Petter.  Scott Walker broke a valve during hot laps, ending his night.
