in Victory Lane Washington Midget Racing Association South Sound Speedway, Tenino, Wa. August 14, 2004 by John Hunter Ken Ferris took advantage of a late race altercation among the leaders to win his second WMRA feature of the season on the South Sound Speedway third-mile oval. Ferris drove his Murray Ferris, MAC Towing, Sage Induction Beast/Gaerte to a five car length victory over Spence Gatrell in the Ridgecrest Home, ProFab Racecars Hawk/Gaerte. Ben Petter finished another three car lengths back in the Kenworthy Motorsports, MAC Towing Beast/Gaerte with Rob Lindsey and Rick Kraft rounding out the top five. With an eight car invert, Nick Seidelman and Matt Stone paced the field to the green, with Seidelman taking a half car length advantage through turns one and two. Stone was able to exit two a little better and was able to take the lead entering turn three. The running order after the initial lap was Stone, Seidelman, Gatrell, Brian Olson and Kraft. On lap two, Moss was able to get under Kraft exiting turn four to move into the top five. Stone was increasing his lead over Seidelman who had his hands full with Gatrell and Olson. Gatrell was able to get under Seidelman on lap three to take second with Olson following right behind. The order after three laps was Stone, Gatrell, Olson, Seidelman and Moss with Kraft, Ferris, Petter, Mike Gardner and Lindsey rounding out the top ten. Stones advantage over Gatrell was six car lengths. Ferris moved into the top five on lap four when Kraft slid up high in three and four. Petter, who was right on Ferris’ tail, was also able to get past Kraft, who was battling a loose condition. Gatrell was slowly reeling in Stone with Olson, Moss and Ferris right behind. Gatrell was looking for an opening as Stone was running a little high line through the turns, but Stone was driving his best race of the year and wasn’t about to make a mistake. On lap nine, Kenny Wood pulled into the infield with mechanical problems. Finally on lap eleven, Gatrell went a little high exiting turn two allowing both Olson and Moss to get by in turn three and start their pursuit of Stone. Stone was running smooth and fast as the top three, running nose to tail, began to pull away from the field. Stone made all the right moves as he encountered the lapped traffic of Ken Muth Kevin Wood and Alan Norton. Finally on lap twenty-four, Olson saw a slight opening as he exited turn four and was able to get his front wheels even with Stones cockpit. At the same time, Moss was getting a good jump off of turn four and thought that he could get under Olson. Disaster struck as the trio entered turn one. Stone appeared to give Olson enough room on the bottom, but Moss’ right front got over Olson’s left rear forcing both cars into Stone and all three, hard into the turn one wall. Stone’s best drive of the year came to crashing halt. After having spent countless hours to rebuild his severely damaged car, for the second week in a row, Olson had extensive damage to both ends of his car. As all three cars were put on the wrecker, Muth pulled off with ignition problems. For the restart, the lead lap running order was Gatrell, Ferris, Petter, Lindsey, and Kraft, Gardner and Seidelman with Skeeter Flake, Kevin Wood and Alan Norton a lap down. Gatrell paced the restart but spun his wheel exiting turn four allowing Ferris to pull even as they entered turn one. With the preferred line, Ferris was able to take the lead exiting turn two. Ferris slowly pulled away from Gatrell as Petter, Lindsey and Kraft stayed evenly spaced. At the checkered, Ferris held a five car length advantage over Gatrell with Petter another three car lengths back. Lindsey, Kraft, Gardner, and Seidelman were the only other cars on the lead lap. Ferris’ victory pulled the veteran driver to within twenty-four points of Moss in his chase for a second drivers championship. Gatrell had his best feature finish of his rookie season and Petter took the lead towards the Rookie of the Year honors. Kenny Wood was victorious in the B Dash over Lindsey and Seidelman with Olson taking the A Dash over Ferris and Moss. Heats went to Gardner over Kenny Wood and Lindsey with Olson winning the fast heat over Moss and Stone. Ferris set fast time with a clocking of 13.539.
