Dominates StateLine Washington Midget Racing Association StateLine Speedway, Post Falls, ID, July 31, 2004, by John Hunter Rick Moss continued his quest for another WMRA championship with a decisive victory in the thirty-five lap WMRA feature on the fast quarter-mile StateLine Speedway oval. Moss drove his Zakula-Beal-Auctioneers Beast/Pink Ford to a fifteen car length victory over Rob Lindsey in his SpeedMart Beast/Gaerte. Matt Stone finished a close third in the Kenworthy Motorsports Beast/Gaerte with Spence Gatrell and Ken Ferris rounding out the top five. Rookie of the Year contender, Gatrell, and Lindsey paced the field for the initial start with Lindsey edging ahead exiting turn two. As the field exited turn four, contact was made with Ben Petter spinning onto the front straight. Rick Kraft was at the wrong place at the wrong time and made contact with the spinning Petter, damaging the steering and ending his night. Petter made a quick trip to the pits for repairs and was able to make the restart. For the double file restart, Lindsey again jumped to the lead. Moss, who didn’t have a great initial start, was able to get under Gatrell exiting turn two and begin his chase of Lindsey. At the end of the first lap, Lindsey held a car length advantage over Moss with Gatrell, Stone and Brian Olson rounding out the top five. Ferris, Steve Spoor, Nick Seidelman, Scott Walker and Petter rounded out the top ten. Petter was able to pass both Walker and Seidelman on lap two and one lap later got around Spoor for seventh. Lindsey was running the low groove with Moss, following right on his tail, waiting for a mistake. The top eight were running under a blanket. By lap eight they were into lapped traffic as Tony Villelli and Alan Norton moved high to allow the leaders to safely get by. Moss kept looking low for an opportunity to pass exiting turn two but Lindsey was able to shut the door as they entered turn three. Ken Muth was next to get lapped on lap fourteen. On lap sixteen, Villelli called it a night with mechanical problems. The top ten positions remained static with the top eight still nose to tail. After sixteen laps, the running order was Lindsey, Moss, Stone, Gatrell and Ferris, with Olson, Petter, Spoor, Walker and Seidelman rounding out the top ten. Moss was having no luck trying to use the bottom to get around Lindsey so he started to try the outside entering turn one. For the next six laps, Moss would try high entering turn one and then diamond off exiting turn two, but Lindsey was able to keep his line and hold Moss and the field at bay. The top eight were still under a blanket to the delight of the fans. Finally, on lap twenty-three, Lindsey slid a little high exiting turn two, allowing Moss to get along side Lindsey entering turn three. Lindsey tried to hold Moss off but to no avail. Lindsey dropped into line behind Moss as the field entered turn one. The remainder of the field stayed nose to tail with no positions changing. Stone, who was having his best run of the season, was next to take the attack to Lindsey. Over the final dozen laps, Moss began increasing his lead over Lindsey as the positions two through eight remained nose to tail. On lap thirty-three, Walker exited with overheating issues. Moss held about a fifteen car length advantage as he took the white flag with positions two through eight still nose to tail. As Moss took the checkered, contact was made in the middle of the tightly bunched pack. Olson slammed hard into the front straight wall exiting turn four. His car rode the wall, got airborne as he took the checkered, and rolled about three times. Olson was awake and talking but was transported to the hospital complaining of neck pain. The car was severely damaged from front to rear. Petter started the night off with fast time (12.710) for a new track record on the newly repaved track. Walker led all four laps in taking the B Dash over Seidelman and Kraft. Olson also led from the start to capture the A Dash over Ferris and Spoor. Kraft won the first eight lap heat after taking the lead on the opening lap over Walker and Gatrell. In the fast heat, Lindsey was able to withstand the charges of Olson and Ferris. Moss made a rare mistake in the heat and spun in turn three.
