Olson Two for Two at South Sound
Washington Midget Racing Association
South Sound Speedway, Tenino, Wa. , July 16, 2004  , by John Hunter

Brian Olson used his second row starting position to his advantage for his second straight feature victory on the third-mile South Sound.  Olson piloted his Ford Powertrain Applications Ellis/Ford to a three-car length advantage over Ben Petter in the Kenworthy Motorsports, MAC Towing Beast/Gaerte.  Rick Moss finished third in the Zakula-Beal Auctioneers Beast/Pink Ford.

Rick Kraft and Nick Seidelman paced the eighteen car field to the green with Kraft taking the advantage entering turn one.  Seidelman’s Esslinger appeared to misfire, allowing the inside rows to take the top three positions exiting turn two.  The running order at the end of the first lap was Kraft, Olson, Stone, Petter and N. Seidelman.  Kraft was utilizing the low line and had sufficient power exiting the turns to hold a slight advantage over Olson.  Petter was able to get under his team mate, Stone, entering turn three on the second lap with multi-time champion Moss taking fifth at the same time from Seidelman.  The following lap Moss got under Stone entering turn three to move up to fourth, while Jonathan Goetz exited with mechanical problems.  Moss seemed determined, as he was able to get under Petter on lap four while Seidelman was pulling off with ignition issues.  On lap six, Olson was able to get under Kraft entering turn three.  Moss and Petter were right on Olson’s tail and were also able to make the pass on Kraft.  On lap seven, Kenny Wood got into turn three a little hot and made contact with Bob Eldridge, resulting in them both spinning.  Kevin Wood also spun to avoid the mishap.  Kenny Wood had to call it a night after the incident. For the restart, the order was Olson, Moss, Petter, Kraft and Rob Lindsey.  Olson was able to move to a two car length advantage over the next few laps as Moss and Petter raced nose to tail.  Lindsey was able to get around Kraft on lap sixteen for fourth.  As the leaders entered turn one on lap eighteen, contact was made between Petter and Moss with Moss ending up stalled in the infield.  Two laps later, Eldridge spun entering turn one.  Due to the two spin rule, Eldridge’s night was over.  For the restart the running order was Olson, Petter, Lindsey, Kraft and Stone.  The second five were Ken Ferris, Scott Walker, Spence Gatrell and Kevin Wood.  Just after the restart, Ferris’ motor began to sputter and he was forced to pull off. The final yellow of the night waved on lap twenty-two when Kurt Wilson made hard contact with the third turn wall.   Just after the restart, Moss was able to take eighth from Gatrell and one lap later dispense of Walker.  Olson and Petter were waging a tight battle for the lead with Olson appearing to have the advantage exiting the corners and Petter a little faster through the middle.  Lindsey remained about two car lengths behind the leading pair with Stone trying both high and low in an effort to pass Kraft.  On lap twenty-six, Moss was able to out brake Stone entering turn three to take fifth, and one lap later made the same move on Kraft for fourth.  By lap twenty-eight, the leading trio remained nose to tail with Moss another eight car lengths back.  On lap thirty, Moss again used an inside pass entering turn three to get past Lindsey and try to reel in the leaders.  Olson was running the bottom with Petter waiting for a mistake.  On lap thirty-three, Stone was able to get under Kraft for fifth entering turn three.  Gatrell followed to take sixth from Kraft entering turn one.  As the white flag waved, Olson held a two car length advantage over Petter with Moss another three car lengths back.  As the trio entered turn three on the final lap, Petter was unable to gain on Olson but Moss drove in real deep and made contact with Petter.  At the checkered, Olson held a three car length advantage over Petter with Moss another two car lengths back.

Kenny Wood led from the green to capture the B Dash over Kevin Wood.  Ferris won the A Dash over Petter and Lindsey.  Heat races were won by Kevin Wood over Wilson, Walker over Gatrell, and Olson over Moss.  Ferris set quick time for the night at 13.731.  Skeeter Flake encountered valve train problems during his qualifying run and had to park it for the night.
