COONS CAPTURES PACIFIC NORTHWEST CHAMPIONSHIP MIDGET FEATURE
Washington Midget Racing Association
Douglas County Speedway, Roseburg, OR, May 15, 2004, by Floyd Busby

Jerry Coons hooked up with the Stealth Motorsports West house car to capture the 40-lap feature at the annual Pacific Northwest Midget Championship race at the Douglas County Speedway in Roseburg, Oregon. The Arizonan began his quest with a new automatic qualifying Midget track record on the 4/10-mile paved oval in the co-sanctioned Bay Cities Racing Association and Washington Midget Racing Association event, taking the lead from BCRA rookie Greg Dennett on the 33rd lap to win over the 24-car starting field.

Thirty-two Midgets were on hand for the first Midget race in many years at the fairgrounds oval with equal representation of BCRA and WMRA cars as well as two entrants from the Idaho Midget Racing Association. The event was part of the 2nd Annual Don Hein Classic Open Wheel Spectacular shared with the NSRA Sprint Cars and the Old Time Racers of Oregon.

Two-time BCRA Midget Lite champion Dennett, driving his 3D Racing Beast/Wirth Chevy, stepped into the lead from the pole as the 24-starters vied for position. Coons, in Marc DeBeaumont's Stealth/Pink Ford, began inching forward from his ninth-starting position as WMRA's Rick Kraft held second over WMRA's Rory Price and BCRA rookie Garratt Boyden. Price displaced Kraft on the third round. Thomas Meseraull, aboard the Ferrari Beast/Brayton Ford BCRA car, charged past Brian Olson to take fifth on the fourth round and began pressuring Boyden. Following a caution flag, Meseraull displaced Boyden for the fourth position, then set out after Kraft.

Coons was cruising in seventh on the 12th lap when Meseraull moved to the inside of Kraft down the backchute. As the cars entered the third-turn, contact between the two began a chain reaction within the tight confines of the leading pack. Kraft's Beast/Fontana shot outward as rookie Boyden went high to miss the tangle, only to be struck hard, sending his mount off-track with severe damage. As Meseraull spun, Olson's path was closed and he too became involved. Only Meseraull and Olson were able to return to the rear and the melee moved Coons from seventh to third for the restart. The tangle came at an inopportune time for Price, who has passed Dennett down the backstreatch on the 12th lap, only to lose the top spot due to the yellow flag.

Dennett, Price and Coons battled for the lead with WMRA's Brad Curtis moving into fourth over veteran WMRA driver Ken Ferris and WMRA rookie standout Scott Walker. Coons' persistence paid off on the 21st circuit when he got under Price to take second and set his sights on Dennett. On the 26th lap curtis dropped Price to fourth. The determined Dennett held his ground as Coons made attempts to gain the lead. On the 33rd round as the leaders entered the first turn Dennett went high to lap Jim Silva's Chandler Stealth/Chevy V4. Coons tucked in behind Silva and as they exited onto the backstretch took advantage of Silva's wide berth and throttled under to take the lead. Several laps later Walker displaced Price for fourth. Coons took the checkered flag over Dennett, Curtis, Walker, Price, Ferris and six-time WMRA champion Rick Moss with fifteen cars on the leading lap and three lapped cars crossing the line.

Coons began the evening with the automatic one-lap track record of 14.457.

The "B" Dash for the top four cars in the second half of the qualified field went to Moss over Pete Davis, Walker and rookie Skeeter Flake. The fast car dash was won by Brian Olson over Coons, Curtis and Ferris. Heat race wins over the eight-lap route were scored by Michael Hubert III, Moss, Rob Lindsey and Price in a slowest to fastest heat race format. With the fastest 18 cars set for the feature, the semi-main would provide six transfers to the rear. Moss took the 12-lapper over Flake, Pat Quinn, Tim Joyce, Floyd Alvis and Silva.

The event marked the second year that the two sanctioning organizations met for the Pacific Northwest Championship with last season's event at the Shasta Speedway in Anderson, CA.
