Moss Takes Checkered at Ephrata
Washington Midget Racing Association
Ephrata Raceway Park, Ephrata, Wa. ,  Aug 30  , by John Hunter

Rick Moss drove the Zakula-Beal Auctions Beast/Pink Ford to his fifth WMRA feature of the season on the fast Ephrata Raceway oval.  Moss took the lead on lap seven after the top three were involved in a front straight incident, which eliminated four of the top five runners.  Ken Ferris, driving the Skeeter Flake Beast/Gaerte finished second about fifteen car lengths back with Nick Seidelman taking third in the second Kenworthy Motorsports Beast/Gaerte.

The night started with a new track record by Brian Olson but turned sour during the first dash.  As Jeff Bird and Rick Kraft exited turn four for the checkered, Bird started to spin, which put his left front into Kraft’s right rear.  Kraft’s car turned towards the front straight concrete and began flipping into and along the wall, ending up in turn one.  The veteran driver was taken to a local hospital before being transported to Wenatchee for further testing.  The results of his CAT scan were negative and he was released early Sunday morning.

Doug Kammerzell paced the field for the feature with Matt Stone on the outside.  Second row outside starter Tony Seidelman stopped during the pace lap moving him to the rear for the green.  The low groove appeared to be the fast way around as Kammerzell took the lead in turn one.  Brad Curtis and Olson were able to get around Stone entering turn three on the opening lap with N. Seidelman, Ferris and Moss following at the completion of the first lap.  Curtis moved to the outside of Kammerzell in an attempt to take control of the race.  For the next six laps, Kammerzell and Curtis raced side by side with neither holding more than a few foot advantage.  On lap seven, Curtis appeared to take the advantage through three and four but started to spin exiting turn four.  His left front caught the right side of the Kammerzell machine sending him into the front straight wall.  Third running Olson had no place to go and impacted the wall hard just before the flag stand.  This would end an impressive string of top finishes for the top rookie contender.  Fourth running Moss squeaked by on the low side but fifth running Stone was not so fortunate as he was also involved.  The red was displayed to clean up the wreckage.  For the lap seven restart, the running order was Moss, Ferris, N. Seidelman, Rob Lindsey and Bird.  The yellow reappeared on lap ten when Bird came to a stop in turn one due to a broke throttle linkage.  This moved Scott Morgan into the top five, followed by Duane Westby, Ken Muth, Wes Helgeson and T. Seidelman.  On lap sixteen, Muth spun in turn two.  As the field took the green for the restart, T. Seidelman stalled exiting turn four with ignition problems. On each restart, Moss would pull away from Ferris with Lindsey right on Ferris’ tail.  Lindsey was having one of his best nights with WMRA and was all over Ferris but couldn’t find a way around.  The final yellow of the night came out on lap 21 when N. Seidelman spun harmlessly exiting turn four.  For the final fourteen laps, Moss slowly pulled away from Ferris while Lindsey lost ground to Ferris.  The best race on the track was between Morgan, Westby and Muth as the trio raced under a blanket.  On lap thirty-one, Westby took fifth from Morgan.  Two laps later, Lindsey began slowing as he began running out of fuel.  On lap thirty-four, N. Seidelman was able to take the third spot from Lindsey.  At the checkered, Moss held a fifteen-car length lead over Ferris with N. Seidelman a quarter straight behind.  Lindsey held on for fourth, followed by Westby, Morgan, Muth and Helgeson.

The new track record by Olson was the fourth record set this season.  The dashes went to Kraft and Moss.  Lindsey took the first heat over Kammerzell and Westby. Curtis won the second heat over Olson and Moss.  In this heat, N. Seidelman and Ferris were involved in a minor incident exiting turn four.
