Moss Takes 81st Checkered

Rick Moss continued his move toward the season point lead by driving his Zakula-Beal Auctions Beast/Pink Ford to his fourth win of the 2003 season Saturday night at South Sound Speedway in Rochester, WA.  Moss worked past rookie Brian Olson in the Ford Powertrain Applications/J&L Fabricating J&L/FPA Ford on the 9th of 25 laps in the feature event and held off a late challenge by new track record holder Brad Curtis, back from his Midwest racing sojourn in the Composite Laminate Specialties/Aldercrest Auto Rebuild Beast/Gaerte, to take the win.  Ken Ferris, point leader entering the event, brought out a red flag when he ran over a wheel, flipped and slid about 50 yards upside down along the outside retaining wall in turn three on the 11th circuit.  He was shaken but walked away from the serious looking crash.  His car appeared to be a total loss.  At the finish 2nd running Curtis led Olson, who has not finished worse than 6th in WMRA this year, Rick Kraft and Rob Lindsey across the line.

When the green flag dropped on the 19 car starting field, Tony Seidelman grabbed the early lead from his outside front row starting spot.  Pole sitter Rob Lindsey held second at the end of lap one but Olson, Ferris and Moss took over the 2nd through 4th spots by the end of the second tour.  Olson grabbed the lead on lap 3 with Ferris and Moss moving up two laps later.

The first yellow waved when mechanical problems slowed Duane Westby on the backstretch on lap 6.  Westby pulled into the pits and later rejoined the field.  Bobby Bird parked for the night at the same time followed two laps later by Darren Linder.

Moss took the lead on the ninth lap and, on the 11th circuit; the yellow reappeared for a John Wood spin in turn three.  The yellow quickly went red when Ferris climbed a wheel and demolished his car in spectacular fashion.

When action resumed, Moss was at the front followed by Olson, T Seidelman, Kraft, Curtis, Lindsey, Doug Kammerzell, Nick Seidelman (making his first start in the 2nd Kenworthy Racing car), John Wood, Matt Stone, Kurt Wilson, Scott Morgan, Ken Muth, Kevin Wood and Jeff Bird.  Stone was working his way through traffic after having to give up his 3rd scheduled starting position when a throttle spring broke sending him to the pits prior to the start of the main.

Moss took command while Curtis started to move, getting past Kraft on lap 17 and taking Olson in traffic on the 23rd lap following the restart after N Seidelman spin brought out the final yellow of the night.  Curtis was able to stick with Moss over the final two laps but couldn’t get quite close enough to make a move for the lead.  Olson edged Kraft for third.   Kammerzell, Stone, T Seidelman, J Wood and Scott Morgan followed fifth place Lindsey.

In preliminaries, Curtis’s new record time was 13.34; Kammerzell took the Dash over Ferris; Linder won heat 1 over Wilson and K Wood; Kraft edged B Bird with Lindsey third in heat two and Moss previewed the main event in besting Olson and Kammerzell in heat three.
