Moss Tops Field at Stateline
Washington Midget Racing Association
Stateline Speedway, Post Falls, Id., August 2, 2003, by Andrew Kunas

Seattle’s Rick Moss led the final 23 laps to win his third Washington Midget Racing Association feature of the year Saturday night at Stateline Speedway in Post Falls, Idaho.  Moss, who started in eighth, inherited the lead on lap 13 when an inadvertent tap from the seven-time WMRA champion sent then-leader Matt Stone of Everett spinning in turn two. Moss, proceeded to dominate the rest of the 35-lap event on the ¼-mile, semi-banked, asphalt oval. Stone charged from the back of the field to finish in fourth place.  Nick Seidelman earned a second place finish ahead of Brian Olson, Stone, and defending series champion and current point leader Ken Ferris, who had run as high as second place during the race before falling back.

Moss was in fourth place after only one lap, with Ken Ferris, who started seventh, running in fifth after only two laps. On lap four, Seidelman moved into second place and Moss into third. The red flag was displayed on the next lap when Skeeter Flake ran off the track in turn one and rolled over. He escaped uninjured.  Light rain began to fall just before the restart, but never intensified enough to pose a threat to racing.  Moss would move into second on lap nine, while Ferris took the fourth position. Moss would make several attempts at passing the 16-year-old Stone for the lead, but could not make anything work. Stone’s chance for his first career victory disappeared when he spun on lap 13.  Ferris moved into second place on the restart, but fell back on lap 19 with his motor cutting out intermittently. The final caution flag waved on lap 26 for a spin by Idaho’s Stuart Birkinbine in turn three.  Running fourth on lap 31, Doug Kammerzell suffered mechanical problems and exited the track. Pole-sitter Bob Eldridge fell out of the race mid-way through.

14 cars competed in the WMRA’s eighth race of the season. Ken Ferris had fast time early in qualifying with a time of 13.32 seconds. With only three cars following him, Moss bested Ferris’ time with a mark of 13.27 seconds. Seidelman timed in at 13.43 seconds, with Olson and Kammerzel running times of 13.52 and 13.55 seconds, respectively.  The four-lap B-Dash was won by Birkinbine ahead of Eldridge, Justin Popple, and Flake. The A-Dash, featuring the four fastest qualifiers, saw Olson taking the checkers over Seidelman, Moss, and Ferris.

Two eight-lap heat races were run, both running caution-free. Birkinbine won again in the first heat, with Eldridge, Tony Villelli, Scott Morgan, and Flake in tow.  Rick Moss started last in the second heat race, but that didn’t stop him from winning. Starting seventh, Moss was up to fifth by lap three. Two laps later, he was fourth. Each of the last three laps Moss would pass another car. Moss took the lead and the win in turn four approaching the checkered flag. Kammerzel finished second ahead of Stone, Ferris, Olson, and Seidelman.

The next WMRA event is August 16 at South Sound Speedway in Tenino, Wash.
