Captures Gregg Memorial Washington Midget Racing Association South Sound Speedway, Tenino, Wa., June 7, 2003, by John Hunter Rick Moss drove the Zakula-Beal Auctioneers, Snap On, Beast-Pink Ford to a fifteen car length victory in the Bob Gregg Memorial at South Sound Speedway. Moss took the lead on lap thirteen from Ken Ferris and was never seriously challenged over the final twenty laps in winning his 78th career WMRA feature. Brian Olson in the Shefchik Ellis-FPA Ford finished a very impressive second with Rob Lindsey in his Gambler-Esslinger third. With a nine car invert, Rob Lindsey and Pete Bittrolf paced the field to the green with Lindsey taking a slight advantage as the field entered the first turn. In the middle of the pack, contact was made between Brad Curtis and Ken Ferris with Curtis spinning up the track in turn two. Bobby Bird slowed and lightly tapped the spun Curtis. Skeeter Flake was not as fortunate as he plowed into the front of Curtis causing considerable damage to both. On the restart Lindsey got the advantage entering turn one, but the real mover was Brian Olson who went three wide to take the lead as the field raced down the back straight, with Bittrolf losing many positions. The running order after the first lap was Olson, Lindsey, Rick Kraft, Ferris and Moss. Ferris appeared to be the fastest car on the track, as he took third from Kraft on lap three and second from Lindsey on the next lap. Olson held a slight advantage over Ferris as Ferris tried high and low to find an opening. Jeff Bird called it a night on lap seven with mechanical problems. Moss was able to take fourth from Kraft on lap seven and third from Lindsey on lap eight as the top two had only stretched their lead over the field to about five car lengths. On lap eleven, Ferris was able to diamond off turn two and out brake Olson entering turn three to take the lead. The running order after eleven was Ferris, Olson, Moss, Lindsey, and Kraft. Moss took second from Lindsey on the next lap with an inside pass in turn three. On lap thirteen, Moss was able to take the lead from Ferris as the pair split a slower car exiting turn two. Ferris and Moss raced nose to tail until lap nineteen, when Ferris slowed dramatically when he encountered low oil pressure. Moss was stretching his lead over Olson but the real movers were Doug Kammerzel and Darren Linder who were closing in on Lindsey and Kraft. On lap twenty-one, Bob Eldridge spun entering turn one. His night was over due to an overheating problem. The running order for the restart was Moss, Olson, Lindsey, Linder and Kammerzel. Moss brought the field down for a slow restart with the loser being Kammerzel as he developed a slow leak in his tire, which put him in the pits on the following lap. On lap twenty-three, Linder moved around Lindsey and appeared ready to challenge the leaders for a second straight Tenino win. The yellow waved for the final time on lap twenty-four when Matt Stone jumped out of gear and stalled at the top of turn four. He was able to restart but again jumped out of gear and pulled into the pits. The running order for the restart was Moss, Olson, Linder, Lindsey and Kraft. Moss again brought the field down for a slow restart but immediately pulled away from Olson who was trying to hold off Linder. Nick Seidelman and Bobby Bird were in a four way dice with Lindsey and Kraft for the third position when Linder lost a cylinder on lap thirty-two and called it a night. Seidelman got past Kraft on lap thirty-three for fourth and B. Bird passed Kraft for fifth the next lap when Kraft’s motor went sour. Moss held a fifteen car length advantage over Olson at the checkered in capturing the Bob Gregg Memorial. Olson was another five car lengths ahead of Lindsey who had his best feature finish with WMRA. In heat race action, Linder held off Jeff Bird in the first heat. The second heat was slowed once for a spin by Lindsey, with a little help, and was won by B. Bird, a half car length ahead of Kraft. Olson took the fast heat ahead of Moss and Ferris. In hot laps, Wes Helgeson took a nasty looking flip through turns three and four. Wes said that something broke entering turn three, bicycled and flipped into the wall and then into the catch fence before landing back on the track. The front of the car was ripped off in the violent looking crash, but fortunate, the driver was uninjured. The next race for the WMRA is next Saturday night, June 14, at Anderson. This is a co-sanctioned event with BCRA and IMRA.
