Spoor Wins Season Finale
Washington Midget Racing Association
Wenatchee Wa.  Sept 21, 2002   by John Hunter

Steve Spoor led wire to wire in winning the Washington Midget Racing Association season finale on the fast quarter-mile Super Oval.  Spoor, driving the J & J Sales and Leasing, Circle A Construction, John Deere CESCO, Spoor-Gaerte took the checkered a scant half car length ahead of Rick Moss in the Kenworthy Motorsports, Sandblasters Inc. Beast-Gaerte in the thirty-lap feature in capturing his first ever WMRA feature.  Rick Kraft driving his Normet, USA, Callahan-Fontana finished third, three car lengths behind the leaders.

With a nine car invert for the feature, Jeff Bird and Spoor paced the field for the start.  The 2002 WMRA champion, Ken Ferris, was forced to start at the back of the field after stopping on the track prior to the start. Spoor took the advantage over J. Bird entering the first turn with outside second row starter, Kraft, following Spoor around the pole sitter exiting turn two with Rory Price and Brad Curtis rounding out the top five at the completion of the first lap.  Spoor and Kraft were slowly pulling away from J. Bird as Price, Curtis, and Moss were dicing for fourth.  On lap three, Jer Bird exited with motor problems.  That same lap, Price was able to get under J. Bird for third while Moss took fifth from Curtis.  The following lap, Tony Seidelman called it a night when his Scat V4 developed problems.  For the next few laps, Kraft and Spoor raced nose to tail for the top spot while Moss was trying both high and low to take third from Price.  Finally on lap twelve, Moss was able to get around Price and set sail for the leaders.  The race for fifth was by far the best race on the track as positions were being exchanged several times each lap.  Nick Seidelman was the first to get by J. Bird and into the top five on lap twelve with Darren Linder, Ferris and Curtis following on lap thirteen.  By lap fifteen, Moss caught Kraft and was able to make the pass exiting turn four.  Linder took fifth from N. Seidelman on lap sixteen with Ferris and Curtis also getting by as Seidelman’s Autocraft began to slow when he lost a cylinder.  The first yellow of the night waved on lap twenty-one when Curtis spun in turn one when he got into oil dropped by Kurt Wilson.  The red came out to clean up the track.  The running order for the restart was Spoor, Moss, Kraft, Price and Linder with Cam McLean unable to restart.  As the green waved, Spoor ran the low line with Moss using the high line.  Kraft was just a car length back with no place to go.  For the final ten laps, Spoor held his line while Moss looked for a mistake.  The two made contact on lap twenty-three exiting turn two but neither lost their momentum.  As the white flag waved, Moss gave it one last try on the high side exiting turn two but lost a little traction and tucked in behind Spoor.  As Spoor exited turn four to take the checkered, contact was made between Price and Linder as they entered turn three with both cars spinning.  Curtis was left with nowhere to go and made slight contact with Price as the remainder of the field took the checkered.  At the line, Moss was less than a car length behind Spoor with Kraft another three car lengths back.  Ferris, Doug Kammerzel, Pete Bittrolf and Rob Lindsey were the only others to finish on the lead lap.  By virtue of this fourth place finish, Ferris and co-owner Ray Hoene captured their first owner’s championship.  Unfortunately, Ray was unable to witness the race due to illness.  After the feature, the elated Spoor stated that this was the first time he had ever led a lap with WMRA.

Doug Kammerzel set quick time in the Carl Peter VW with a clocking of 12.660.  The dashes were won by Tony Seidelman over Rob Lindsey and Curtis over Moss.  Heats went to Pete Bittrolf over Wilson, Linder over Spoor and N. Seidelman over Curtis.  During the heats, Bobby Bird and Dixon Helgeson experienced motor problems, ending their night.
