Moss Sets Record with #75
Washington Midget Racing Association
Spanaway Speedway, Spanaway, Washington, August 17, 2002, by John Hunter

Seven time WMRA champion, Rick Moss, went into the record books as the all time feature winner by taking the checkered Saturday night at Spanaway Speedway. Moss, driving the Kenworthy Motorsports, Sandblasters Inc., Powder Coaters, Ad-Fab, Beast-Gaerte took the lead from Nick Seidelman on lap fourteen with an inside pass exiting turn four. Moss’ victory was in doubt until the end but he was able to hold off a hard charging Ken Ferris in his MAC Towing, Beast-Gaerte for his 75th career feature win. Moss captured his first WMRA feature nearly twenty years ago, also at Spanaway. Darren Linder, driving the family TCR-Fontana was third after starting ninth.

Pete Bittrolf and Nick Seidelman made up the front row for the feature with Seidelman taking the advantage as the field exited turn two. Moss, starting outside row three, used the high line through turns one and two and the low groove in three and four to move up to third as the field completed the first lap, with Jeff Bird and Brad Curtis rounding out the top five. Current point leader, Ferris, was up to fourth from his eighth place starting position on lap two as N. Seidelman extended his advantage over Bittrolf. On lap three, both Moss and Ferris were able to get around Bittrolf and begin their pursuit of N. Seidelman who had extended his advantage to nearly a half straight. Back in the pack the racing was two by two with Curtis taking fourth from Bittrolf on lap six and Rick Kraft and Linder disposing of Bittrolf a lap later. After seven laps the running order was N. Seidelman, Moss, Ferris, Curtis and Kraft. On lap nine, Bird exited when his car jumped out of gear. As each lap passed, N. Seidelman’s advantage shrank and by lap twelve, Moss was right on his tail. On lap thirteen, Linder was able to get around Kraft for fifth as Cam McLean exited the track. As the leaders approached lap traffic on lap fourteen, N. Seidelman chose the high line entering turn three with Moss deciding to go low. A slight hesitation by N. Seidelman was all Moss needed to get under and take the lead. Two laps later, Ferris was also able to get under N. Seidelman whose handling was going away. Duane Westby’s night ended on lap twenty-one due to overheating. Both Moss and Ferris were extending their advantage over the field and by lap twenty-five were a straight ahead of third place with Moss holding a five car length lead over Ferris. On lap twenty-six, Linder was able to take fourth from Curtis and a lap later got under N. Seidelman for third. Along with his handling problems, Seidelman’s engine was beginning to miss. On lap thirty, Bittrolf called it a night due to brake problems. By now, Ferris appeared to have the stronger car as he was right up to Moss’ tail, but passing was another matter. Ferris gave it his all over the final laps but his efforts fell just short as Moss took the checkered for his seventy-fifth career feature victory. Linder finished a distant third with Curtis and Kraft tightly bunched for fourth and fifth. Moss took an extra victory lap in the opposite direction to celebrate his record setting feat. In victory circle, Moss praised his crew, especially Tom Margeson, for the winning set-up. Moss now has a record, which in all actuality will never be broken, that is not shared with anyone else. Over his career in WMRA, Moss holds the record for most championships, seven, with Ken Peterson and the most consecutive feature victories, five, with Shorty Templeman.

Ferris set quick time for the seventh time this season with a clocking of 13.522. Bittrolf led wire to wire in winning the first dash over Rob Lindsey with Curtis taking the fast dash over Moss. Doug Kammerzel took the lead on lap two of the first heat from Tony Seidelman and held on for his first heat race win of the season. Moss won the second heat over Ferris. The next race for WMRA will be held at South Sound Speedway on Saturday night, August 31.
