Linder Masters South Sound
Washington Midget Racing Association
South Sound Speedway, Tenino, Washington, by John Hunter

Darren Linder drove the Linder Racing, TCR/Viper-Fontana to a narrow victory in capturing his first WMRA feature of the season. Before the feature, Linder was not a favorite to capture the win as he had experienced magneto problems during hot laps and fuel pickup problems during his heat. Fortunately, his crew was able to diagnose and solve all the problems prior to the feature. Linder was seventh after the first lap and slowly worked his way through the field and was able to get under seven time WMRA champion Rick Moss, driving the Kenworthy Motorsports Beast-Gaerte, entering turn one on lap nineteen, taking the lead a half lap later. Linder took the checkered two car lengths ahead of Moss with Ken Ferris in his Allied Custom Draperies, Beast-Gaerte third.

Glen Guiles and Jeff Bird lead the field to the green but a ragged start resulted in a complete restart. The second time was the charm for Bird as he used the banking in turn one to take the top spot, as the outside row starters all advanced. The running order after the first lap was Bird, Travis Johnson, Moss, Guiles, and Ferris. Chuck Rude pitted after the first circuit with a broken left rear radius rod. For the next two laps, Johnson hounded Bird for the lead and on lap four, contact was made between the leaders, allowing Moss to assume the lead entering turn three. The order after four laps was Moss, Johnson, Ferris, Linder (up from seventh after the first lap) and Bird. Pete Bittrolf’s night ended on lap five due to a vibration in the engine with Cam McLean pulling in a lap later. Bird’s, car lost the handle after the contact with Johnson and on lap nine a broken oil line fitting caused him to spin exiting turn four, bringing out the only caution of the night. Under the yellow, Johnson pitted with a flat left rear but was able to restart at the rear of the field. For the restart, the running order was Moss, Linder, Ferris, Rick Kraft and Brad Curtis. Moss and Linder slowly pulled away from the field as Ferris, Kraft and Curtis were staging a terrific battle for third. Linder meanwhile appeared to be able to get through the middle of the corners better than Moss. On lap eighteen, as the pair exited turn four, Linder was able to get his nose under Moss and took the lead from the seven time WMRA champion entering turn three on lap nineteen. For the final six laps, Moss would gain a little ground entering the turns but lose ground from the apex out. At the checkered, Linder held a two car length edge over Moss with Ferris, Kraft and Curtis under a blanket for third, fourth and fifth, another five car lengths back.

Ferris set fast time at 13.939, a new track record, his first ever. The B dash went to Nick Seidelman over Pete Bittrolf and Anthony Seidelman while Kraft took the A Dash over Moss and Ferris. Mike Gardner, making his first start of the season, captured the opening heat over N. Seidelman and Duane Westby, with Johnson taking a narrow victory in heat two over Moss and Bird. In hot laps, Bird lost a motor in his normal ride but was able to assume driving duties in his dad’s car.
