Ferris Dominant at Stateline
Washington Midget Racing Association
Stateline Speedway, Post Falls, ID, by John Hunter

Ken Ferris continued his domination of the Washington Midget Racing Association with his third feature victory of the season. Ferris, driving the Ferris/Hoene, Allied Custom Draperies, Mac Towing, Beast-Gaerte took advantage of a late race caution and took the lead on lap thirty-two from Nick Seidelman in the Seidelman Racing, Denny Long Autocraft VW in the thirty-five lap feature. Seidelman finished two car lengths back at the checkered with Rick Kraft in the Normet USA, Carco, Callahan-Fontana another five car lengths back in third.

The all Idaho front row of Tony Villelli and Andy Going lead the field to the green but third row starters Jeff Bird and Kraft used the low and high lines respectively to lead the field after the first lap. N. Seidelman, Villelli and Darren Linder rounded out the top five. Kraft was all over the rear bumper of J. Bird for the next few laps and made his move to the lead exiting turn two on lap four. Ferris meanwhile was only up to sixth after four laps with the running order being Kraft, J. Bird, N. Seidelman, Linder and Steve Spoor. N. Seidelman took second from Bird in turn three one lap later and immediately set sail for the leader. For the next two laps N. Seidelman tried to get under Kraft but didn’t have the momentum getting off the turns. On lap seven, Kraft slid a little wide exiting turn two allowing N. Seidelman the room to finally make the pass exiting turn four. The running order after seven laps was N. Seidelman, Kraft, Bird, Linder and Spoor. One lap later, Ferris used the high groove in turn three to take fifth from Spoor as Linder was getting under J. Bird for third. The nights of Cam McLean and Tony Seidelman came to an end as both experienced engine problems. Two laps later, Ferris disposed of Linder as Spoor also got under Linder who had just broken a rear brake rotor. Ferris was a half straight behind Kraft who was about five car lengths behind N. Seidelman. For the next five laps, Ferris began rapidly reeling in Kraft and was able to take second in turn two on lap sixteen but was still about ten car lengths behind N. Seidelman with Kraft, Spoor and J. Bird rounding out the top five. Over the next five laps, Ferris closed on N. Seidelman as J. Bird exited with a broken exhaust on lap nineteen. On lap twenty-one, Going spun entering turn one which bunched the field. After the restart, N. Seidelman did everything he could to hold off Ferris but made the mistake of leaving a small opening exiting turn two on lap thirty-two allowing Ferris to pull ahead a half lap later. Spoor was working hard to get by Kraft, trying the low groove, but was not successful. As the checkered fell, Ferris was two car lengths ahead of N. Seidelman with Kraft five car lengths back followed closely by Spoor, Villelli and Bobby Bird.

Bobby Bird and Kraft were victorious in the dashes. In the first heat, Villelli nosed out B. Bird while Ferris edged Kraft for the fast heat after starting from the back. Ferris set quick time with a clocking of 13.665 on the quarter-mile oval.
