Fastest Again Washington Midget Racing Association Spanaway Speedway, Spanaway, Washington, by John Hunter Ken Ferris, from Dupont Washington, driving the Ferris/Hoene owned, Allied Custom Draperies, Mac Towing, Sage Induction Beast-Gaerte, took the lead on lap nine in route to his second consecutive feature victory of the season. Ferris took the checkered over a straight ahead of second place Rick Kraft driving his NORMET-USA, Carco Calahan-Fontana with Brad Curtis in the family owned Sage Induction Beast-Gaerte third. Shawna Wilskey and Glen Guiles paced the field for the feature with Guiles taking the advantage between turns one and two on the opening lap with Jeff Bird following to take the second position entering turn three. The running order after the first lap was Guiles, Bird, Wilskey, Curtis and Ferris. Guiles and Bird began to pull away from the remainder of the pack as positions three through six were constantly changing. On lap three, Kraft used the high line to move from sixth to third as Curtis got shuffled back to sixth. The next lap, Ferris used the high line to move around Wilskey entering turn three to take the fourth slot. Guiles had built his lead to about four car lengths by lap six with Ferris all over Kraft. On lap seven, Kraft tried to use the high side in turn three to take second from Bird but ended up losing the position to Ferris. On the next circuit, Ferris went under Bird to take second while Curtis was taking fifth from Wilskey. On lap nine, Ferris got under Guiles down the front straight to take the lead as Kraft took third from Bird. The running order after nine laps was Ferris, Guiles, Kraft, Bird and Curtis. The next lap, Wilskey and Pete Bittrolf got together in turn one with both cars coming to a stop, bringing out the only yellow of the feature. On lap eleven Curtis got around Bird for third and three laps later, Kraft got under Guiles to take second but by then Ferris had built up and insurmountable lead. Curtis took third from Guiles on lap fifteen and for the remainder of the race all positions remained static. Ferris was circling the track about two-tenths a second faster than anyone and took his second feature of the season by a wide margin Darren Linder led Curtis to the checkered in the B Dash while Kraft took the A Dash ahead of Ferris. Linder was not as fortunate in his heat race. As the field exited turn two on the opening lap, Linder tried to make it three wide and touched the right rear of Curtis with his left front sending both cars into the back straight wall. Both cars rode the top of the wall with Linder’s left front in the cockpit with Curtis. As the cars separated, Linder flipped but was not injured. The same couldn’t be said for his TCR, which was severely damaged. Curtis had front-end damage but his crew was able to make repairs before the feature.
