Season Opener Washington Midget Racing Association Spanaway Speedway, Spanaway, Washington, April 27, 2002, by John Hunter Ken Ferris driving the Ferris/Hoene owned, Allied Carpets, Mac Towing, Beast-Gaerte, took just seven laps to take the lead from front row starter Darren Linder in his TCR-Fontana and led the remainder of the way in capturing the WMRA season opener at Spanaway Speedway. The win was the eighth WMRA feature of his twenty-year career. Linder finished six car lengths back with Brad Curtis third another ten car lengths back in his Beast-Gaerte. Dixon Helgeson and Linder paced the field for the twenty-five lap feature as Rick Kraft headed for the pits with a faulty magneto. Linder took the advantage as the field exited turn two on the initial lap while Ferris was able to use the high side in turn three to take second from his outside second row starting position. The running order after the first lap was Linder, Ferris, Helgeson, Glen Guiles and Travis Johnson. As Linder and Ferris pulled away from the field, the real battle was for third with Helgeson, Guiles, Johnson and Curtis changing positions each lap. Johnson was able to take third on lap five but the leaders had pulled away with a half straight advantage. On lap seven, Ferris made his move on Linder entering turn three and finally made the pass down the front straight. Ferris appeared on a rail as he slowly increased his advantage over Linder. Curtis was able to take fourth from Guiles on lap nine but was nearly a straight behind third running Johnson. Shawna Wilskey and Helgeson were waging a terrific battle for sixth as Jeff Bird began slowing with engine woes. As the race progressed, Ferris increased his advantage over Linder to five car lengths as Johnson was being reeled in by Curtis. Curtis was able to make the pass for third on lap twenty-one but Ferris was too strong for the rest of the field as he took the checkered in the all green feature. In the fast heat, Kraft slowed with a miss while in second position. His rapid deceleration caused Ferris and Curtis to make slight contact with Curtis spinning. Linder won the heat over Johnson, Guiles and Ferris. Linder and Johnson won the dashes. Bird nearly won the A Dash but lost power exiting turn four on the last lap with Johnson and Ferris taking evasive action. Curtis set fast time at 13.825 in his new Beast.
