Superb at Super Oval Washington Midget Racing Association Wenatchee, Washington, Sept. 23, 2001, by John Hunter Darren Linder drove the family owned TCR Viper/Fontana to a car length victory over Rick Kraft aboard his Normet USA, Rock-Tek, Carco Callahan/Fontana, in the final WMRA race of the season on the fast Wenatchee Valley Super Oval quarter mile oval. Nick Seidelman, driving the Seidelman Racing, Denny Long, Autocraft VW finished third with John Starks, and Mel Kemper rounding out the top five. As the feature lined up, the championship was still undecided with John Starks, Rick Kraft and Brad Curtis separated by only twenty-four points. Bobby Bird and Mel Kemper paced the field for the thirty-five lap feature, but it was Jeff Bird who led the first lap with an outside, three wide, pass in turn three. Starks was the man on the move as he was up from sixth to second by lap two and took the lead from J. Bird in turn two on lap three with Linder, Curtis and Kemper rounding out the top five as Don Kane exited with a flat tire. For the next five laps, J. Bird tried unsuccessfully to get under Starks with Linder trying the outside of Bird. On lap eleven, Linder was able to take second from Bird on the outside of turn two. A lap later, Bird tried to get under Linder and spun in turn one. The restart order was Starks, Linder, Curtis, Ken Ferris and Kraft. On lap fifteen, Curtis used the low line in turn three to take second from Linder as the top six raced under a blanket. Starks would exit the turns high and run a half grove from the pole in the turns allowing Curtis a very slight opening. Lap after lap the top six ran nose to tail and side by side with Ferris appearing to have the quickest car but stuck in fourth. On lap twenty- seven, Ferris lost a fuel pump, ending a frustrating season. As the field exited turn four on lap twenty-eight, Starks slid a little high as Curtis sensed the opening he was waiting for. As the pair entered turn one, contact was made and both Curtis and Starks spun. Fortunately for all, no other contact was made as the tightly bunched field scattered. The championship for Curtis was just a memory as both restarted at the rear of the field. The restart order was Linder, Kraft, Jeff Bird (up from last after his lap twelve spin), Kemper and Seidelman. As the green waved, several cars made contact at the rear of the field with Glen Guiles, Pete Bittrolf and Tony Villelli taking evasive action. Jeff Bird appeared to be on a mission in his Kawasaki powered racer as he was as fast as anyone on the track but on lap thirty-three, his eagerness proved to be his undoing as he climbed Kraft's left rear entering turn three, bending his front suspension. Kraft saved it and with two laps to go, tried to overtake Linder. Linder kept his composure and line, leaving no opening for the determined Kraft. As the filed took the white flag, Kemper made contact with the front straight wall allowing Starks to take fourth. At the checkered, Linder held a car length advantage over Kraft with Seidelman another two car lengths back, in third. The last lap pass for fourth by Starks proved to be the championship winning move as he beat Kraft by four points in the season ending points chase. The win was Linder's second feature win of the season. He was exceptionally happy in victory lane after his triumph. Linder's night started off slowly as he encounter mag problems during practice and spun in turn one during his heat. Starks, by taking fourth on the final lap, won his third straight WMRA championship by a scant four points over Kraft, with the top four separated by only forty points, the closest in many years. Ken Ferris set fast time at 12.377, his first quick time of the season, with his back up motor after breaking a valve during the last race. The dashes were won by Guiles over Kemper by mere inches and Starks over Curtis. In heat race action, Jeff Bird outclassed the field in the first heat with a full straight victory over Kemper. The fast heat went to Starks over Seidelman.
