Dominant at State Line Washington Midget Racing Association Post Falls, Idaho, August 11, 2001, by John Hunter Brad Curtis, driving the Joan Curtis Beast/Gaerte, took just seven laps to move from his outside row four starting position to the lead in capturing his first WMRA feature of the season on the fast State Line Speedway quarter mile oval. . The win moved Curtis to within 24 points of Rick Kraft for the season championship as he took the checkered by over a straight ahead of Mel Kemper in the Ralph Taylor owned Beast/Buick V-6. It was Kemper's best ever WMRA feature finish. Kraft took third in his Callahan/Fontana with a last lap pass of Jeff Bird. Early in the evening it appeared as if Curtis would not be able to make the feature as he was experiencing rear end problems. Darren Linder and Bird paced the field for the thirty-five lap feature with Linder getting the jump as the field entered the first turn. There appeared to be two grooves on the banked oval, which kept the field tightly bunched. Curtis and John Starks were tying to make the most of the start and were able to pass several cars early and get into the top five by the third lap. The first yellow waved for Tony Seidelman who stalled in turn two, at the entrance to the pits, with motor problems. The running order for the restart was Linder, Bird, Kemper, Curtis and Starks. On lap four, Curtis utilized the low groove to pass Kemper for third in turn one. Two laps later, Curtis dove under Bird in turn three, to take second, with Kemper also able to get under Bird. On lap seven Linder slid a little high entering turn three allowing Curtis the opening he needed to take the lead from with Kemper, Bird and Starks running nose to tail. Glen Guiles, Kraft, Ken Ferris, Duane Westby and Nick Seidelman rounded out the top ten. For the next eight laps Curtis began extending his lead as the remainder of the field ran under a blanket. On lap fifteen, Linder spun exiting turn four and slid backwards up the track. Bird was able to get by with only inches to spare. Starks, right on Bird's tail tried to take evasive action but was hit from behind by Kemper. The resulting contact sent Starks into the wall resulting in severe damage to all four corners of his car. Fortunately, Starks was able to walk away unhurt. For the restart the running order was Curtis, Bird, Kemper, Guiles and Kraft. As each lap passed, Curtis extended his lead over Bird with Guiles, Kraft and Ferris racing side by side for fourth through sixth. On lap twenty-five Kemper saw the opening he was searching for and took second from Bird exiting turn four. At the same moment, Kraft was able to use the high groove to take fourth from Guiles. Three laps later, Tony Villelli exited with power steering failure while both Westby and Ferris began experiencing motor problems, ending their night. Over the final laps, Curtis kept extending his lead over Kemper while Bird was having his hands full trying to hold Kraft back. As the white flag waved, Kraft went high through turn three and was able to wrestle third away from Bird. At the checkered, Curtis had over a straight advantage over Kemper with Kraft another five cars back. Bird, Guiles, Linder and Seidelman rounded out the top seven. Starks set fast time for the third time this season with a time of 13.532. Bird took the win in the first dash over Kemper while Kraft used his outside front row starting position to capture the A Dash over Starks. In heat race action, Bird was able to get the jump on Linder to win the first heat over Kemper while Seidelman was able to hold off the challenge of Starks in winning the fast heat. It was Seidelman's first heat victory of the year. Results: Fast Qualifier: John Starks 13.532 B Dash: Jeff Bird, Mel Kemper, Duane Westby, Darren Linder.
