Moss Gets First Win Of Season
Washington Midget Racing Association
Spanaway, Washington, July 28, 2001, by Ed Williams

Rick Moss picked up his first win of the 2001 season Saturday night at Spanaway Speedway in Tacoma, WA. The seven time WMRA Champion drove John Gregg's Main St. Motors/Cascade Motors Beast/Gaerte around young Nick Seidelman in his family owned Seidelman Racing Enterprises/Denny Long Edmunds/Autocraft VW on the 13th of 36 laps and was not seriously challenged as the final 22 laps ran under the green flag. John Starks took the runner up slot in the Starks Logging/Blue Dot Race Cars Starks/Gaerte on lap 27 with Seidelman holding on to the third position in the best drive of his young career. Brad Curtis and Kenny Ferris rounded out the top five.

Mike Gardner and Jeff Bird formed the front row with fast timer lining up 10 at the start. Bird grabbed the early lead buy Seidelman moved from sixth starting to second in the first turn and on lap 2 he took the lead and started to pull away. Moss also got a break on the start and moved past Bird into second on lap 5. The two leaders started to stretch their lead until the yellow flew for a minor spin on lap 7.

On the restart, Seidelman held the lead with Moss challenging in second.

Bird, Gardner, Mel Kemper, Jr., Curtis, Ferris, Duane Westby, Starks and Rick Kraft filled the top ten spots. The leaders encountered traffic by the 10th lap but Seidelman handled both the traffic and Moss's challenge expertly.

Starks began to move shortly after the restart and by lap 13, when Moss worked past Seidelman, he held a solid third. As the last half of the race continued to run green, Starks was able to get by Seidelman as the youngster's car started to drift up the track in the turns. Bird, Curtis, Ferris, Gardner, Kemper and Kraft raced each other behind the leading trio until Bird pitted with mechanical problems on lap 23. At the finish Moss had a ¼ lap lead on Starks with Seidelman 20 car lengths back in third. Kraft, Gardner, Kemper, Darren Linder and Westby followed Curtis and Ferris to complete the top ten.

In preliminary action, Moss set fast time at 13.472, Bird took the B Dash and won heat 1 with a strong move from his back row starting spot over Glen Guiles; Starks won the A Dash, Kraft bested Curtis in heat 2.
